LUng Cancer-related risk factors and their Impact Assessment

Smoking tobacco is the leading cause of lung cancer, but it is not the only factor that can increase this risk. Other substances such as uranium, asbestos, arsenic, nickel, coal smoke, soot, and diesel fumes can also raise the chances of getting lung cancer.

The LUCIA project is all about understanding such risk factors. In the context of lung cancer, LUCIA looks at personal and environmental factors, and how our bodies react to them. To do this, the project is creating a toolkit including databases, AI models, wearable devices, sensors, and advanced technologies to help analyse the data. Once we know how these risk factors affect us, LUCIA will study the tiny changes that happen in our cells and genes because of them. This information will be used to make suggestions for policies and improve the way we check lung cancer and diagnose it using digital tools.

In this project, YAGHMA works to create a list of digital health activities and a tool that classifies health data for people who work in public health and handle health information. This will help understand the environmental impact and sustainability of the project’s activities. YAGHMA will also analyse how well LUCIA’s AI tools are performing and whether any new risks arise. We will monitor how AI policies change in the countries where testing takes place, and make sure all of this information feeds into the project’s recommendations.

In addition, YAGHMA will be observing the alignment between the LUCIA project and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). We want to see how the project can contribute to the achievement of these goals and bring up new ideas to make it happen.

The LUCIA project is funded by the Horizon Europe programme and led by Technion – Israel Institute of Technology (IL).
